It’s been a turbulent year for the hard-rocking trio LIINES, their last single – the double A-side 7” Disappear/Be There – was released on Reckless Yes Records and they look set to take their powerful live show to the masses. Then recently, bassist Steph Angel decided to leave. Rather than spiral into a state of flux, the band has picked up where they left off, with Mr Heart’s Tasmin Middleton stepping in on four-string duties.
The loss of a powerhouse bassist like Steph could have caused issues, but as the three girls head onto the stage at Gullivers in Manchester’s northern quarter as part of the brilliant Sonder Festival, it’s as though nothing has changed. There are no visible nerves and from the instant that the band launch into their short but very sweet set it’s clear that it’s business as usual. And that business is melting faces with some of the most ferocious rock n’ roll heard for years. Call it post-punk, hard rock or whatever, the bottom line is it’s a solid groove and damn infectious.
With the band currently in the latter stages of recording their debut album, we’re treated to a few tracks that have yet to be released among the tried-and-tested tunes we’re used to, and they fit right in with what we’ve come to expect from the trio. Zoe McVeigh’s powerful guitar work and passionate vocals soar while Leila O’Sullivan keeps everything together with some amazing drum beats.
There’s an astonishing amount of female talent emerging in the rock scene these days – particularly in Manchester – and LIINES certainly are at the forefront of what could be a mini musical revolution. Discover them now while you have the chance.
